Though employees have unique skills and dispositions that make them a great asset to a company, they are essentially being paid for committing their time to the business. During the past few years, we have seen a great upheaval in the workplace leading to the Great Resignation as people decided that no amount of money was worth the time they spent frustrated with the work, the tools or the expectations they previously endured.

Calendly recently released the Time Economy Report to delve into the causes of frustration and the potential solutions to keeping employees happy — and willing to spend their time doing a job.

Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend.”

Theophrastus

The Time Economy Report surveyed 1,000 North American knowledge workers about how they spend their time at work. Some results were eye-opening and point to ways employers can improve employee satisfaction.

Only about 32 percent of participants said they were thriving at work, while the majority — 68 percent — considered themselves on the spectrum of ambivalent (38 percent) to angry, verging on quitting (4 percent).

Further diving into the results reveals why so many workers are stressed or unengaged: A majority (61 percent) say it’s harder than ever to find the proper work/life balance, and 46 percent said they can’t get all of their work done in 40 hours.

Participants also cited flexibility and not being overworked as two aspects they value highly in a job. In fact, 33 percent of individual contributors and 41 percent of management surveyed said they would choose more free time over a raise — indicating that time truly is money to some.

Lost time is never found again.”

Benjamin Franklin

Finding solutions to help employees save time will pay off for employers who want to increase worker well-being and decrease turnover. Technology can play a big role by increasing efficiency and decreasing the friction it can take to get tasks done.

The No. 1 productivity killer cited in the report was the time employees spent managing inefficient tools in an effort to do their work. Understanding your team’s workflow and asking about their pain points can help guide you to the right solution.

Inefficient tools hamper all workers, whether in the office, remote or hybrid. Unified endpoint management (UEM) tools such as VMware Workspace ONE, Microsoft Intune and Jamf solve many of the issues that can hamper employees — password management and secure access to the information they need, to name a few examples. Even having the same desktop layout at work and at home saves time by maintaining the employee’s routine. The ease of setup provides huge efficiencies for IT teams. The right UEM for your organization can help rectify pain points small and large to give employees more time back in their day.

And the investment pays off in retention and recruitment. According to the Time Economy Report, modern technology is important to 82 percent of workers, and 64 percent say they would ask about the technology an organization uses when interviewing for a job. Half of respondents said they are often frustrated with the tools they work with, and an equal number revealed they would quit if they had to work with outdated technology.

The key is not in spending time, but investing it.”
Stephen R. Covey

Providing the right tools pays dividends for organizations seeking to make employees happy while simultaneously improving the bottom line. UEM tools boost productivity not by making people work harder but by allowing them to work more easily and quickly.
