The right tools for working remotely
The novel coronavirus spreading this year has affected lives worldwide, even those who aren’t sick — it has impacted markets, travel plans and, most recently, business decisions. Some employers have instituted work-from-home periods and others are considering it as the virus spreads.
At companies where employees haven’t typically worked remotely, the possibility may cause managers some anxiety. But with modern digital workspace solutions and a few rules of thumb, employees can be just as productive at home as they are in the office (if not more so!). Consider these tips when managing a remote workforce:
- Set clear expectations. Let employees know how and when they should be available to check in with bosses or team members. If their work is too sensitive to be conducted over unsecured Wi-Fi, tell them in advance.
- Don’t rely solely on email for communication. Inboxes can get overloaded, or the message could be misunderstood. Try chat programs and videoconferencing to keep everyone on the same page. Or take advantage of the old standby: pick up the phone for a quick call.
- Discuss scheduling. Ideally, employees would work their usual business hours; however, if shutdowns impact schools and daycare centers, they may need to take breaks during the day and/or work afterhours. Keep the team abreast of blocks when people may not be available for meetings or urgent responses.
- Ensure employees have the tools they need to work efficiently at home. This could include everything from headsets to remote access to files. VMware Workspace ONE Unified Endpoint Management solution is the most flexible and feature-rich product that allows employees to securely access their company data from any location. Employees don’t have to worry about managing logins, passwords and network access with secure single sign-on.
