As ransomware attacks and other cybersecurity threats ramp up, VMware announced a host of innovations to empower customers with better security at its recent conference, VMworld 2021.
The advancements help deliver consistent security for endpoints, virtual machines and containers with an end-to-end Zero Trust architecture. While organizations relying on VMware environments already benefitted from the industry’s most advanced security, its new security updates ensure they can keep up with the latest threats.
“Many security solutions used today were built for a different era. Highly distributed digital enterprises can’t simply take old security tools and processes, apply them to today’s new realities and expect to be protected,” said Tom Gillis, senior vice president and general manager of the Networking & Advanced Security Business Group at VMware. “VMware is delivering security solutions built specifically for the threats customers face today. We use the power of software, a scale-out distributed architecture, Zero Trust design principles and a cloud delivery model for better security that’s easier to use.”

Zero Trust in clouds and data centers
Few organizations can focus on securing a single environment; according to VMware research, customers typically use multiple public clouds to run their business in addition to an on-premise data center. To meet the needs of these customers, VMware is pioneering Zero Trust security inside clouds and data centers, which allows more secure communication between workloads and apps, including data communication.
These enhancements also increase security against ransomware attacks, which are becoming more pervasive. VMware’s Carbon Black Cloud records 1.2 trillion security events per day on average and helped stop more than 1 million ransomware attacks over a recent 90-day period. This security measure can now be enabled simply and quickly with a switch in VMware vCenter. In addition, VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery offers a cost-effective DR-as-a-service (DRaaS) solution to enable rapid recovery and help organizations avoid paying ransom.
Modern app security
Modern apps communicate via APIs, making these a new endpoint that past security approaches don’t address. VMware Tanzu Service Mesh improves app resiliency and reliability while reducing blind spots with contextual API behavior security. This helps developers and security teams understand when, where and how APIs are communicating.
Another advancement, CloudHealth Secure State, now delivers Kubernetes Security Posture Management (KSPM) that provides visibility into misconfiguration vulnerabilities across both Kubernetes clusters and connected public cloud resources.
Anywhere Workspace security
As more organizations manage an increasingly distributed workforce, VMware’s Anywhere Workspace provides broader and more effective security for every app and team member. A new Workspace ONE next-generation compliance engine examines posture checks on devices, operating systems and app, performing any necessary remediation with minimal impact on end users. VMware Carbon Black integrates with Workspace ONE and now is optimized for Horizon VDI environments, which will help secure the distributed edge while providing remote workers with an optimal experience.
Additional Data Loss Prevention (DLP) capabilities are forthcoming to help organizations better comply with HIPAA, GDPR, PCI and other data privacy laws by preventing sensitive data from leaving pre-defined environments.
VMware is working with Intel on an additional unique solution to help secure edge environments, creating a direct link between the Intel vPro platform and VMware Workspace ONE to enable automated out-of-band maintenance, keeping PCs up to date on the latest security patches and infosec policies no matter their location or the state of the operating system.
