Change can be difficult in any organization, especially when it involves modernizing legacy systems (or legacy attitudes — but that’s a different story!).

Tech Orchard has guided hundreds of companies through the transition to VMware’s Workspace ONE Modern Management platform. Though executives can often see the long-term value in making a big IT change, it rarely feels like a good time for a large capital outlay and a project that may tie up team members in the transition process.

To learn the actual outcomes of such an undertaking, VMware engaged Forrester Consulting to update a Total Economic Impact study on VMware Workspace ONE Modern Management for Windows 10 PCs. The commissioned study details the significant cost savings and business benefits seen by four large customers globally. The results were more than a little impressive.

According to customer interviews and financial analysis, Forrester found:

  • $62.79 million in benefits over three years versus costs of $22.81 million — an ROI of 175 percent
  • Pay back in less than six months
  • $38 million in total IT task and resource cost savings
  • $9.3 million in end-user productivity savings
  • $15.5 million in legacy software savings

That’s not all. Customers said their organizations experienced additional benefits from switching to Workspace ONE not quantified by cost, including:

  • Improved endpoint security with greater device enforcement and remote management
  • Additional end-user productivity, thanks to automation
  • More efficient asset management for devices and applications
  • Improved employee onboarding, which can lead to employee retention and overall employee skill and quality improvements
  • Improved business security and elimination of unexpected costs through employee offboarding
  • Increased employee satisfaction through reduced issues, less invasive security, improved updates and fewer interruptions

The organizations that were part of the study found additional value with a Windows 10 environment. As remote work has exploded in popularity — and necessity — IT teams have experienced a greater need for cloud-based, modern management. The cloud-native Workspace ONE is ideally suited for the shift in work style and location, delivering intelligence-driven, over-the-air management that simplifies IT operations, improves security against modern threats and empowers the best employee experience across any device, anywhere. IT representatives interviewed expected to alleviate overhead with automated, drop-ship provisioning, sending PCs directly to employees wherever they are. Another area of time-savings for the IT department was in help desk tickets: Interviewees expected to reduce PC-related tickets by 20 percent the first year, growing to a 30 percent reduction in the second and third years. The time to resolve each help desk ticket was also expected to be reduced by half.

What’s more, IT professionals said Workspace ONE allowed a continuous delivery model for critical OS patches, which can be pushed out to all employee devices without them having to be “on-network” or VPN-connected. The analytics Workspace ONE provides value to IT staff as well as end-users. One computer engineering lead said a benefit of the change was the ability to predict user problems and solve them, even before the user notices.

End-users benefit in a variety of ways, but one particularly noted in the study was streamlining application requests. Before Workspace ONE, it could take up to three days for IT to process an application request; with Workspace ONE, that wait time is slashed to one hour, and delivery is automated.

Tech Orchard has seen these impressive results over and over with clients, and we’re happy to talk through the process and benefits with any company looking to streamline their PC management procedures.
