In theory, I can clean my own house, do my own plumbing, paint my own walls. In theory, I can cut my own hair (scary). In theory, I can change my own oil. None of this stuff is rocket science, right?
In reality, there are people who can do these things for me better, cheaper, and faster because they specialize in these areas. They are focused and experienced. This is how they make their living. In fact, the opportunity cost of me doing these things myself is too high. My time is better spent focused on our core business.
Mobile is no different. MDM, mobile strategy, MEM, mobile business process is not rocket science, right? Your internal IT department can probably figure it out. But should they? Wouldn’t their time be better spent focused on your core business?
According to a recent article by Jon Olstik, enterprise IT has a long way to go in figuring out mobile- it’s still such an undeveloped space. Many of the major vendors are growing quickly and their platforms are changing so rapidly that it’s next to impossible for their internal teams to keep up. In fact, the article reports that in a recent study of security and IT professionals:
- 38% say that MDM is difficult to integrate with other security technologies
- 35% say that they have experienced scalability problems with MDM as far as
supporting a large number of mobile devices - 30% say that MDM features and functionality work differently on different
types of mobile devices - 30% say that MDM is more difficult to use than they anticipated
- 29% say that they have experienced difficulty with MDM implementation
In a space that is quickly changing, it probably makes sense to call in the pros. In theory, you can probably do it yourself. In reality, however, you’ll save time and money, and the job will be done better by people who focus on mobile.
