When I’m talking to organizations about how easy it is to tag an iPhone or any mobile device, I’m more often than not met with a bit of incredulity. I mean, “No one actually hears about anyone getting their devices pulled directly out of their hands, right?” Surely people don’t walk around looking for smartphones to just grab out of someone’s hands?

Wrong:

It might not be as inventive or entertaining as these guys (the chopstick phone thieves), but it’s just as potentially damaging and happens every day in every city where there are large quantities of people with smartphones simply going about their daily lives. This happens to both the average Everyday Joe and the CEO/CIO/Director alike. Trust me, I’ve heard the stories and seen the damage that results from something like this happening, particularly when there was no password on the phone and it just happened to have emails containing personal data, files containing financial data and an app that was improperly backed up and storing patient data locally, too.

You wouldn’t do this with your laptop would you? So why are you letting the same data on your laptops and desktops run around on your phone unprotected when theft can happen so easily?

In the story that’s associated with the video above, the guy was eventually caught and the phone returned … with no password.
