As the mobile landscape continues to evolve, so do threats to consumer privacy and security. For years we’ve been warned about the dangers of weak passwords and over sharing personal information online. Many businesses have Internet and social media usage policies in place to help protect employees from attack. Below are some facts about the increasing dangers of BYOD in the enterprise. Is your organization prepared … and protected?
Juniper Research reports that nearly 1 billion employee-owned smartphones and tablets worldwide will infiltrate the workplace by 2018. Given the growing BYOD (bring your own device) trend, having the proper policies and procedures in place to protect your data and secure your employees’ devices is more important than ever.
According to Consumer Reports, a projected 3.1 million Americans were victims of smartphone theft in 2013, nearly double the number of thefts just one year before. Additionally, another 1.4 million smartphones in the U.S. alone were lost and never recovered. From contacts and messages to emails and file data, information of all kinds could fall into the wrong hands in just minutes — particularly from the vast number of devices without even the simplest security measures installed.
A recent Gartner survey indicates that a quarter of business users admitted to having had a security issue with their private device in 2013, but only 27 percent of those respondents felt obliged to report this to their employer. Is your workplace currently at risk? Would your employees come clean to help you take appropriate action if the circumstances arise?
From the ability to wipe a lost or stolen device to controlling where data is stored and which apps are used, you have many options for managing a mobile workforce today.
